Named after Frederick Douglass’ estate in Anacostia, Washington, D.C., the Universal Health Services’ (UHS) Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center, GW Health in Ward 8, marks a historic milestone as the District’s first inpatient facility to open in over two decades.

As the lead partner in the joint venture, Cube Root is providing program/construction management services to support the redevelopment of the 180-acre East Campus. This site, formerly a mental health hospital complex, is one of the largest redevelopment projects in the District, promising over five million square feet of mixed-use development.

The project comprises multiple phases, including a new hospital site, ambulatory care center, roadway infrastructure, campus microgrid system, and parking garages. This undertaking requires extensive coordination with various stakeholders, DC agencies, the local community, and ANC members in Wards 7 and 8.

When complete, the Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center will feature 136 inpatient beds (expandable to 196), a verified Trauma Center, ICU, Surgery, Newborn Delivery, Women’s Services, Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Adult and Children’s Emergency Departments, and a helipad for emergency transports. This facility is poised to be a game-changer in healthcare, representing a cornerstone of hope, health, and progress for the entire community.
